FREDRICK SCHERMER
I arrived in San Francisco in 1995 from the Netherlands with a BA in economics, management & leisure. My first job was at an importer business of Japanese goods. The last two years that I worked for this company I was in command of the actual logistics and together with the team helped break the monthly record many times. I then switched to fulfill my dream of becoming a writer. For an unknown writer I sold a lot of books, but it didn't bring home enough bacon. I started working part-time at a B&B and a Financial Firm, and though it gave me time to keep on writing it did not lead me to where I had hoped to be. It was time to start anew and I went to San Francisco State University to study Urban Planning. I am a good student. I focus on what I think can be improved and that angle sometimes surprises people. In turn, this way of looking at things may appear to show an attitude of all critique and no praise. I admit that this paper on Muni definitively contains one strong point of critique that Muni's development over the years has not been guided enough by established economic rules. I consider this paper therefore a particular window onto Muni's functioning, but I am not negative about Muni per se. Whenever I go to school or to work I take Muni. The original paper was written for Jason Henderson's transportation class in cooperation with Nick Moffitt and Tommy Travers.
* I am most likely the only person in San Francisco with a degree from Breda.
